Detroit has been getting a real bad rap in the press these days. But believe it or not, there’s actually some good news coming out of the Motor City this week, as the North American International Auto Show rolls into town. Surprisingly, the atmosphere during the media preview days could be described as cautiously optimistic.

Toyota’s sales total was down by 15.9 per cent over 2008, the worst of the top 10 apart from Hyundai, but it still finished the year with 200,991 deliveries to the 119,568 of GM Holden and 96,501 for Ford.
Toyota has continued its run as Australian sales leader, topping the list for 2009.

Toyota will lease 150 Prius plug-in hybrids this winter. The car will drive like the standard Prius with a longer electric-only cruise range.
Toyota plans to lease 600 plug-in Prius hybrids globally starting this winter, then plans to sell tens of thousands in two years.

n an indication of the increased focus on environmentally friendly motoring, the world’s best selling hybrid car has taken out the 2009 Drive Car of the Year People’s Choice award.
