Top Production Cars at Detroit

Every year the auto industry renews itself, and the North American International Auto Show in Detroit is where we see it happen. While the concept, or prototype, cars are cool to look at and get the most press, it’s the production vehicles that people will actually park in their driveways, use to get to work, shuttle the kids to soccer practice and haul groceries home from their local Costco. These are the cars that determine what consumers really think about each brand and the ones that determine each company’s success — or failure — for the year to come. While this year’s crop of assembly-line-ready machines is sparse, a few highlights are cause for real optimism. Here are picks for the 10 most notable production cars at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show.

Coolest Concept Cars From the Detroit Auto Show

In looking at the concept, or prototype, vehicles unveiled at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it’s clear that electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids are here to stay. Even companies like Volkswagen, which just a couple of years ago didn’t consider hybrids as a viable long-term solution, have given in and are unveiling models like the gas-electric New Compact Coupe Concept. Others are adapting existing models to run on battery-powered electric motors, as BMW did with its Concept ActiveE. But not all of the new concepts at the show were hybrids. Cadillac, Chevrolet and MINI each showcased vehicles that point the way to future products with traditional engines. Here are picks for the best concept cars at the show.

But believe it or not, there’s actually some good news coming out of the Motor City this week, as the North American International Auto Show rolls into town.
